If The Sims 4 does not open, it is possible that the game is with incompatible mods or running on the wrong version for your computer. On Windows and macOs (via Origin), the Electronic Arts game no longer supports old operating systems, and still requires a series of minimum requirements to run. The content made by the player community has always been one of the highlights of the franchise, but different creations can cause conflict or be incompatible with original game objects. 1. Check the requirements and version of The Sims 4
Before attempting the solutions below, make sure your computer meets the recommended requirements for running The Sims 4. If the game is installed on a PC with configurations below the minimum requirements, it is likely that the user will not be able to run the game.

Then, see if your Windows 10 is 32 or 64 bit or find out the version of your macOS. Since the end of 2019, EA Games no longer supports The Sims on machines with macOS Metal and Windows 32-bit systems. If this is the case, use The Sims 4 Legacy.

The Sims 4 Legacy is a free update to The Sims 4 and The Sims 4 Deluxe versions, and allows users to play on unsupported systems. When opening the game, those with the wrong version may receive the error message “Unable to start, game data is missing”. To solve the problem, download The Sims 4 Legacy on Origin.

The update is available directly through the EA Games online store. Games saved in the Legacy version can be transferred to the current version of The Sims 4. However, it is worth mentioning that the compatibility of expansions, packages and object collections is only valid for releases before October 2019. That is, expansions like Vida College and later will not be available for The Sims 4 Legacy.

2. Remove the custom content
Most The Sims 4 errors and startup issues are caused by mods that are corrupted, or that are incompatible with other custom content that you downloaded. To find out if the mods are causing conflict and preventing the game from starting, go to the “Documents \ Electronic Arts \ The Sims 4” folder and move the “Mods” folder to another location on your PC. Then try to start the game. If The Sims 4 runs, probably one of your mods is causing the problem.

If you don’t want to give up the extra content, there are ways to find and delete just the problematic mod. Our tip is, if you have few files, create a new “Mods” folder in “Documents \ Electronic Arts \ The Sims 4” and gradually copy the contents of the previous folder back into the game. You can also use the Mod Conflict Detector (http://modthesims.info/d/561550/). This program checks and lists mods by color. Red for broken ones, yellow for wrong version mods (The Sims 2 or 3), blue for duplicates and orange for mods that may be problematic.

3. Repair the game files
Damaged files, updates, or even Origin issues can prevent The Sims 4 from opening. But it is possible to fix this problem in a simple way, repairing the original files of the game.

Open the Origin program and access your game library. Right-click on The Sims 4 icon and select the “Repair” option. Origin will analyze the game files and, if it finds something wrong or missing, it will download the files.

4. Disable the “Origin in the game” option
Some users were able to open The Sims 4 normally after disabling the “Origin in Game” option. To do this, open Origin and its game library. Right-click on The Sims 4 and select “Game Properties”. Then, uncheck the box “Activate Origin In Game for The Sims 4”. Save and try to start the game.

5. Reinstall Origin and The Sims 4
If the other solutions don’t work, reinstall Origin and then The Sims 4. A clean installation can be the best way to remove conflicts or corrupted files from the game.

Don’t forget to make a backup of your “The Sims 4” folder, located in “Documents \ Electronic Arts \”, as there will be your saves, screenshots and mods. Save a copy of the folder on your computer and then do a complete reinstall.
